Kabir Kumar (Sun Kin) :: Sep 09, 2025.

Why is it so hard to write an email? Unlike a social media caption, which is meant to be tossed-off and seen only for seconds, the only way to write a missive via online mail is by not quite looking at it. My best emails are written in bed while allowing my mind to flow clear of impurities like “is that gonna come across?”

Anyway, this is not one of those well-thought-out and carefully written ones. I’m tired and quite busy, and so for anyone who’s been curious what I’m up to, here are some hard stats for the summer in Sun Kin. Everyone loves lists, right? If you don’t have time for all that, listen to the new Left Tracks song that dropped today, and if you live in Los Angeles, please come see us live in one week at Scribble in Highland Park.

Earlier this year I decided that my clip of releasing things was way off from how much work I had in the can. HENCE the summer of singles! Here’s a recap of all the new tracks and brand new remixes (both of me and by me) that I dropped this summer, all culminating in next week’s Left Tracks mini-album “LT2”. Hopefully you find something you like. Happy exploring!

  • June 10: Left Tracks - "Business Days"

  • June 18: Sun Kin -"Big Window (S Munson Remix)”

b/w Styles Munson - "Bugg (Sun Kin Remix)”

  • June 26: Planet 81 - “Let Love Be the Guide (Sun Kin Remix)”

  • July 10: Sun Kin - “33”

  • July 29: Koyal - "hiatus (Sun Kin Remix)”

Shows:

Happy five years in LA to me 🥳! A pattern that I’ve noticed recently is that every five years that I live in a place, I find that I’ve gathered enough musical friends to start putting together band lineups that I really love. To honor these exceptionally talented groups, I wanted to start playing more shows. Without any industry support, I booked 8 gigs, which is a recent personal record. Next step is some light touring…

Production Work:

My business is flourishing! In addition to new singles and albums by clients who’ve found me through live shows, TikTok and flyering, I’ve been in major demand for remixes and podcast jingles alike. Hit me up if you have something you need produced, mixed or mastered!

  • A new GUPPY song appears on the horizon! “Back to the Thing” is the first track I produced & mixed for us and is dropping October 3rd :) Pre-save it here.

  • I play bass and did some production on a couple tracks from

PL*NET F*TNESS by Pacing (released July 25 on Asian Man Records).

Check out ‘Advertising’ and score major bonus points if you can find my one line of vocals!

  • A short list of the instruments and sounds contained on my client Steve Delamater’s upcoming album might include: acoustic & electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, flute, piccolo, tenor saxophone, trumpet, alarm clocks, pedal steel guitar, the sound of traffic and a bunch of people going ‘we must retreat!’ Coming soon…

  • Eagle-eyed readers of this blog may remember that I’ve been working on a very special Sun Kin album with my dad called Bobby’s Voice, which is a tribute to his brother who passed away in 2018. My dad wrote all the lyrics and I performed and produced all the music. The album is almost through to the mastering process and my dad is currently writing a treatment for a stage (!) version.

Books Read:

I keep a phone note list of all the books I’ve read in the past eight years. Earlier this summer I realized that I was about to beat out my yearly record (set in 2023 with 13 books), so I decided to put in some major work and now I’m at 18 books and counting! This goes off theme a bit because the list is from the whole year rather than just this summer, but fuggit, I’m feeling proud:

  • Walker, by Sam Pasternack

  • What You Are Looking For Is In the Library, by Michiko Aoyama

  • Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, by Olga Tokarczuk

  • The Quiet and the Dead, by Joy Williams

  • The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K Le Guin

  • Senselessness, by Horacio Costellanos Moya

  • The Dispossessed, by Ursula K Le Guin ✨

  • The Empusium, Olga Tokarczuk

  • Set My Heart On Fire, by Izumi Suzuki

  • A Pale View of Hills, by Kazuo Ishiguro

  • The Borrower, by Rebecca Makkai ✨

  • The Ministry of Time, by Kaliane Bradley

  • The Book of Form and Emptiness, by Ruth Ozeki ✨

  • South of the Border, West of the Sun, by Haruki Murakami

  • A Burning, by Megha Majumdar

  • Holding Pattern, by Jenny Xie ✨

  • The Myth of Normal, by Gabor Maté & Daniel Maté

  • Polysecure, by Jessica Fern

If you got this far, thank you! I hope you find something special within these lists. With a lot of love,

Kabir
